Installation – FAQs

What equipment will I be supplied with?

A satellite receiver module (dish) is attached to your roof and connected to an Ethernet port (wall plate). You will be supplied with a NBN modem that will sit between the wall plate and the computer.

How large is the dish used to provide your service? Will I need a permit to place it on my building or home?

Standard reachnet NBN installations use a 1.2m. In most cases you will not require a permit to install this equipment.

What equipment do I need?

You will need a PC with the recommended minimum specifications are listed below:

  • Pentium processor (500Mhz or equivalent)
  • English version of either Windows 2000 (SP4) Professional or Windows XP (SP1 & SP2, 32 bit). While generally compatible with the technology, Orion and reachnet cannot provide support for UNIX (including FreeBSD and Linux), Macintosh, Windows Server Editions or 64 bit Windows Operating systems.
  • 128 MB RAM (Windows 2000)/256 MB RAM (Windows XP)
  • One free Ethernet 10BASE-T or 100BASE-T port
  • 150 MB free hard drive space
  • CD or DVD drive
  • Internet Explorer version 5.5 +
  • At least SVGA display (800 x 600 x 256 colours)
  • A standard analogue telephone. Cordless phones in 900MHz band should not be operated in the vicinity of the satellite modem, as they can interfere with its performance.
When will my service be installed?

Barring unforeseen events or circumstances, please allow 30 days from the date of our receiving your signed contract to service installation and commissioning. In some instances, such as in particularly remote areas, the installation may take longer. If you have any questions regarding your installation please liaise with the techinician1who will contact you to arrange a date and time for your installation. In the event of a likely delay you will be contacted and notified by the technician who will arrange an alternative date and time.

How long does an installation take?

Your installation will normally, depending on the complexity and ease of access, take between three and four hours to complete.

Do I need to provide any information?

Yes. You will receive a phone call from the installation technician who will ask you to verify some of your details on your application form, specifically type of roof, number of storey's and potential obstructions which might create line of sight issues e.g. trees, mountains, etc. During this call the technician we make arrangements with you for a date and time for the installation of your service.
